How I’m Trained

(And How I Use It)

Carol Ray, NBC-HWC, CIEC, CPIC

Some people want to know how someone is trained before they work with them. I respect that.

I primarily work with midlife women navigating unwanted eating habits, food and body image issues, identity shifts, health changes, and anyone stuck in long-standing behavior patterns that no longer serve them.

Before the list of certifications, it matters to say this:

I don’t believe you, or anyone, is broken. I believe people are adaptive. The behaviors you’re frustrated with, whatever they are — the night eating, the overthinking, the perfectionism, the “why did I just do that?” — all made sense in context at some point in time.

I see ALL people as creative, capable, whole, worthy and resourceful, even when they feel stuck.

My role isn’t to fix you. It’s to help you see yourself clearly, without shame, so something different becomes possible.

Food, Body, and Eating Work

  • Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor

  • Eating Freely Licensed Binge & Emotional Eating Practitioner (Trauma-Informed)

  • Eating Freely GLP-1 Ethical Weight Management Training

  • Mind-Body Eating Psychology Coach (Institute for the Psychology of Eating)
  • Trauma-Informed Body Image Trainings (Bri Campos; Summer Innanen; Isabel Foxen Duke)
  • Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) Eating Psychology Course

How this shows up:
For many women, food is the loudest symptom. These trainings support work around bingeing, emotional eating, chronic dieting, body distrust, and midlife body shifts without shame, food rules, or moralizing.

Behavior & Pattern Change

  • Certified Positive Intelligence (PQ) Coach

  • Breakthrough Coach Certification (Margaret Lynch Raniere)

  • Motivation Coach Certification (MLR)

  • Chakra Intuitive Certification (MLR)

  • Continuing education in Motivational Interviewing

  • Positive Psychology coursework

How this shows up:
This is often the foundation or engine of my work. It’s where most of the real shifts happen. We identify the loop, interrupt the pattern, and build new internal responses whether that loop involves eating, overthinking, procrastination, drinking, perfectionism, or something else.

Health & Lifestyle Context

  • National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC)

  • Institute for Integrative Nutrition (Health Coach Training + Coaching Intensive)

  • IIN Gut Health Course

  • IIN Hormone Health Course

  • MyMT Menopause Practitioner Training

  • T. Colin Campbell Plant-Based Nutrition Certification

  • Vegan Lifestyle Coach & Educator / Master VLCE

How this shows up:
I’m not your medical provider, and I won’t pretend to be. But I am trained to understand how midlife physiology, gut health messaging, menopause, plant-based nutrition, and GLP-1 medications intersect with behavior so we don’t accidentally turn normal biology into blame or another rule.

Nervous System & Embodied Work

  • EFT / tapping tools

  • Trauma-informed somatic trainings across food, body image and whole life contexts

How this shows up:
Sometimes insight isn’t the missing piece. Sometimes the shift happens when the body settles enough to make a different choice available. This is where we work with the energetic charge, the body — not just the thought.

Alcohol

  • This Naked Mind Alcohol Coach Training

How this shows up:
Sometimes food isn’t the only coping strategy in the room. I support alcohol-curious conversations in the same pattern-based, shame-free way.

Academic Foundation

  • B.A. in Psychology

  • M.A. in Communicative Disorders

How this shows up:
My background shapes how I listen, reflect patterns, and help clients translate insight into real-life change.

Professional Background

Before becoming a full-time coach, I built and led a multi-location speech-language pathology private practice and worked as a clinician, business owner, and mentor for many years.

I understand what it means to function well on the outside while something feels off underneath.

If you’re wondering whether this kind of work is a fit for you, let's talk.
